With a 1.3 billion liters produced per year, cachaça has guaranteed its presence all over the brazilian territory

Due to its historic characteristics, the production of cachaça kept pace with the development of the sugar cane plantation in Brazil.

For centuries, distillation techniques have been improving. Currently, most of the production follows the strict quality standards of the best distilled drinks in the world.

The brazilian production has reached about 1.3 billion liters a year. It yields a revenue of US$ 500 million/year and provides employment to 400 thousand people. The cachaça is produced in all of the brazilian regions. Most of the production comes from the states of São Paulo, Pernambuco, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Minas.

The total number of producers is estimated to be 30 thousand. Most of them produce small volumes which are marketed locally. Large scale production is made in modern distillation columns with sophisticate resources of laboratory analyses. This way, producers are able to maintain the original characteristics of the cachaça and, at the same time, guarantee the product’s quality to its consumers.

Cachaça is the most consumed distilled drink in the country and holds the second place among alcoholic beverages, second only to beer. The brazilian consumption of cachaça makes it the third most consumed spirit all over the world.

Very close to the brazilians, cachaça has different nick names around the country, reflecting the good mood and creativity typical of this people. It is as if any one appreciating the drink, would grant himself the right to call it by an exclusive name.

Cachaça has over two hundred synonyms in portuguese. Some of them would be impossible to be translated into other languages: “the blessed one”, “temper cooler”, “birita”, “goody-goody”, “the bad one”, “pinga”, “the little white one”, “anger-calmer”, “melancholy-killer”...

In a very short time from now the brazilian drink shall bear a quality seal issued by the government, as an assurance of the quality of the best, unique and authentic cachaça.
